How to Layer The Ordinary

You bought The Ordinary and now you're wondering how to layer them? Which ones to use in the morning and which in the evening and which ones first and how to layer them subsequently?

Since it is not within our capacity to answer everyone individually regarding the assembly of their regimen according to the products purchased, I believe that the following blog will be helpful in this regard :)

The Ordinary products are basically either water-based or oil-based. It is important to start layering products with water-based products and move on to oily products and creams. However, which ones are which? We have listed them below. If you were unsure, or if some products will be missing here, you proceed from the thinnest to the thickest consistency of the product.

So, how to layer The Ordinary?

CLEANSING

Squalane Cleanser

WATER SOLUTIONS

If you layer multiple water solutions, DECIEM recommends starting with the one whose benefits you want to utilize the most.

  • AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution* (masque)

  • Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

  • Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

  • Lactic Acid 5% + HA

  • Lactic Acid 10% + HA

  • Mandelic Acid 10% + HA

  • Salicylic Acid 2% Solution

  • Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

  • Marine Hyaluronics

  • Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA

  • Argireline Solution 10%

  • "Buffet"

  • "Buffet" + Copper Peptides 1%

  • Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

  • Matrixyl 10% + HA

  • Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

After using water solutions, the following apply

ANHYDROUS SOLUTIONS

  • Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane

  • Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane

  • Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion

  • Retinol 0.5% in Squalane

  • Retinol 1% in Squalane

  • Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%

  • Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% * use alone

  • EUK 134 0.1%

  • Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%

  • *High-Spreadability Fluid Primer (last step before applying makeup)

If you use Retinols, these should only be used in the evening, as Retinol can cause skin sensitivity to UV radiation. The next day it is necessary to use a product with SPF.

OILY PRODUCTS

Oils should be used after water solutions and before using creams / emulsions. However, some people prefer to use oils as the last step in their skin care routine, or you can seal the products for example with a Natural Moisturizing Factor cream. You can also use it separately.

  • Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F

  • "B" Oil

  • 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Borage Seed Oil

  • 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil

  • 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

  • 100% Organic Virgin Chia Seed Oil

  • 100% Cold-Pressed Virgin Marula Oil

  • 100% Organic Virgin Sea-Buckthorn Fruit Oil

  • 100% Plant-Derived Squalane

  • 100% Plant-Derived Hemi-Squalane

EMULSIONS / CREAMS

  • *Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (after water solutions, before oils / cream)

  • *Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% (after water solutions, before oils / cream)

  • *High-Adherence Silicone Primer (last step before makeup)

  • Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA

  • Mineral UV Filters SPF 15 with Antioxidants

  • Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants

SUSPENSION

  • Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%

  • Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone

  • Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% (as the only suspension it can be applied before cream)

WARNING

Vitamin C and Niacinamide

Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% should be used after water solutions and before oily products, in evening skin care. Do not use together with Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% as these two ingredients have different pH and their combination in one step of skin care is generally not recommended.

Exfoliants and retinoids

We recommend not using exfoliants and retinoids in one regimen (i.e. retinols and AHA BHA, lactic acid, mandelic acid...).

Salicylic acid, Niacinamide and Azelaic acid can be used together, in this order. The only problem with this combination is that it can cause skin sensitivity and drying, so you need to be careful and test this combination on the forearm.

L-ascorbic acid and Retinol are suitable to use separately.

Other combinations

Retinol and Niacinamide is fine.

AHA and L-ascorbic acid is fine, they have approximately the same pH and can be used in the same step of an evening routine.

I believe this guide will be helpful in assembling the sequence of your daily and nightly The Ordinary routine. :)
